Phuket vs Koh Samui for a Luxury Family Holiday

Both have five-star resorts and kids' clubs. They differ on flights, beaches, monsoon timing and how much of the island you will actually see.

Flights decide more than people expect

Phuket has direct wide-body service from the Gulf, Europe in winter, and much of Asia, which means one connection from most of the world. Koh Samui's airport is privately operated, small, and served largely by Bangkok Airways from Bangkok and Singapore — so a second flight and often an overnight in Bangkok. With children under ten, that difference is worth more than any resort feature.

The resorts

Phuket has the depth: Rosewood on Emerald Bay, Trisara's ocean-front pool villas, Six Senses Yao Noi across the bay, Amanpuri for families who want calm, and the Anantara and Banyan Tree properties in Bang Tao for the biggest kids' clubs. Samui counters with Four Seasons Koh Samui, Six Senses Samui and the Ritz-Carlton, all excellent, but the list is short. If your dates are fixed and the top properties are full, Phuket gives you alternatives.

Beaches and water

Samui's northern beaches — Choeng Mon, Maenam — are calmer and shallower, which suits small children. Phuket's west coast beaches are more dramatic and can have real surf from May to October, though the resort bays at Emerald Bay, Pansea and Nai Thon are sheltered. Phuket wins on what you can reach by boat: Phang Nga Bay, the Similans and Krabi's limestone islands are all day trips from a hotel jetty.

Monsoon timing is the real differentiator

The two islands sit on opposite coasts and have opposite weather. Phuket is dry and calm from November to April and wet from May to October, with the heaviest rain in September. Samui is dry from January to August, and its wettest months are October to December. A family travelling at Christmas should choose Phuket; a family travelling in July should choose Samui.

Costs

Broadly similar at the top: a two-bedroom pool villa runs US$700-1,600 a night on either island in high season. Phuket has more mid-luxury supply, so the same budget stretches further outside the marquee names. Airport transfers are cheaper and shorter on Samui — 15-30 minutes to most resorts versus 45-75 minutes in Phuket.

Our recommendation

First Thailand trip with children, travelling between November and April: Phuket, three nights north-west coast and four at a villa property. Returning family, travelling between May and August, wanting a quieter island: Samui. Two weeks: Phuket first for the boat days, then Samui or Bangkok, rather than trying to do both islands in a week.
