Editorial corner of a design-led luxury hotel, representing the Only5Star philosophy

About Only5Star

Genuinely exceptional
places to stay.

An independent guide to hotels and resorts chosen on merit, with four guiding priorities: privacy, design, service and calm.

"Editorial recommendations are chosen on merit. Payment cannot buy inclusion or ranking."

Only5Star is an independent guide to the world's genuinely exceptional places to stay. It exists to help travellers compare places through editorial research, with useful context about suitability, limitations and booking choices.

Our editorial research is guided by four priorities: privacy, design, service and calm. They help us assess how a property fits a particular trip. Payment cannot buy editorial inclusion or ranking.

Only5Star was founded by Dom Abbott. Our guides combine editorial judgement with research from hotel websites and other cited sources. Article notes identify what was checked and when; a recommendation should not be read as a claim of a personal stay unless the article says so.

We are not a booking site and not a travel agent. We point you to the right choice and, where it helps, link to trusted partners who handle the booking. We may earn a commission when you book through selected links. Booking providers set their own prices and terms, so compare the available options. Payment cannot buy editorial inclusion or ranking. You can read exactly how we choose and how the site is funded.

Editorial Principles

How We Work

Opinionated, Not Aggregated

We don't scrape reviews or average ratings. Every recommendation reflects a singular editorial point of view — one that values atmosphere over amenity lists, soul over square footage, and genuine warmth over performative luxury.

Research-led selection

Editorial recommendations on Only5Star cannot be bought. Our guides use published hotel information and cited sources to assess fit. First-hand experience, where explicitly documented, is distinguished from editorial research.

Transparent & Independent

We may earn a commission when you book through selected links. Payment cannot buy editorial inclusion or ranking. Any paid promotional content is clearly labelled ‘Sponsored’ or ‘Advertising’ and kept separate from editorial recommendations.

Intent-Led, Not Volume-Led

We don't chase traffic with 'Top 100' lists. Instead, we match you with the right property for your specific moment: your honeymoon, your milestone birthday, the family reunion that actually needs to work. Context is everything.

The Only5Star Standard

What We Look For

The five considerations below help us explore those four guiding priorities: service, design, dining, sense of place and everyday comfort. They are research prompts, not a claim that we have personally tested every property. First-hand stays are identified explicitly.

01

Service That Anticipates

The difference between a luxury hotel and a truly great one is whether the staff remember how you take your coffee or simply ask you every morning. We look for properties where service is intuitive, personal, and delivered without pretension.

02

Design With Intention

A beautiful lobby means nothing if the bathroom layout is awkward. Design details — from the feel of the door handle to the quality of the blackout curtains — are worth checking in room descriptions and photos before you book, because luxury is in the details, not the Instagram shot.

03

Dining That Rewards Curiosity

The best hotels don't just feed you; they introduce you to a place through its cuisine. We prioritise properties whose restaurants reflect their region and whose chefs source with integrity, not just spectacle.

04

A Sense of Place

A five-star hotel in Kyoto should feel fundamentally different from one in Marrakech. We champion properties that are rooted in their landscape, culture, and architectural tradition — not interchangeable luxury templates dropped from a helicopter.

05

The Invisible Standard

Wi-Fi that works. Hot water that arrives instantly. Soundproofing that lets you sleep. Air conditioning you can actually control. The boring stuff matters enormously, and it is worth asking about before you book, because a leaking shower at $1,200 a night is not a minor detail.
