How to Choose the Right Part of Bali

Bali is really four family destinations, not one. Uluwatu (south-west) has the dramatic clifftop resorts and the best surf — right for teenagers and older kids. Ubud (central) is jungle, temples, and rice terraces — right for younger kids (5+) who'll be interested in the culture. Nusa Dua (east coast) has the calmest, safest swimming beaches — right for toddlers. Canggu (west of Seminyak) has the best food, the best boutique villas, and works for any age but requires a driver for everything.

1. Bulgari Resort Bali (Uluwatu) — Cliff-Top Grand

The most photographed resort in Bali, and rightly. Fifty-nine villas and mansions on a clifftop above Jimbaran Bay, each with a private infinity pool. Villas are large enough for a family of four (Ocean Cliff Villas are ~300 m²); the two- and three-bedroom mansions suit multi-gen groups. Best for families with kids who can swim confidently — the clifftop setting means beach access is via inclined elevator to a private cove.

2. Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan (Ubud) — Jungle Family

The Ubud landmark. Sixty pool villas and suites descending into the Ayung River gorge, with a lily-pond entrance that remains one of the most cinematic hotel arrivals anywhere. The kids' club is exceptional (Kids For All Seasons, ages 4–12), villas are family-sized, and Ubud town is 20 minutes for temples, monkey forest, and craft markets. Best for families with school-age kids interested in Balinese culture.

3. COMO Uma Canggu — Beachfront Multi-Bed

Canggu's best family option. Beachfront setting on the black-sand Echo Beach, three-bedroom penthouse residences that sleep eight, and access to Canggu's excellent food scene by driver in 10 minutes. COMO's kids' programme (COMO Kids) is more educational than most and includes surf lessons on the resort's own break. Best for families with teenagers who want the beach without the Uluwatu vertical drop.

4. NIHI Sumba (Sumba, Not Bali) — For Adventurous Families

A 90-minute flight from Bali, but included here because it's the definitive luxury family adventure trip in the region. Twenty-eight villas across a former surf camp turned five-star lodge, with a genuinely legendary kids' programme (blowgun lessons, boab-tree climbs, spear-fishing) and one of the world's best surf breaks (Occy's Left). Best for families with kids 8+ who want a trip they'll actually remember.

5. Private Villas — The Multi-Gen Answer

For eight or more travellers, a private villa is almost always the better answer than a resort. Villa Vedas (Tabanan, 6 bedrooms), The Istana (Uluwatu, 6 bedrooms), and Villa Sarasvati (Canggu, 5 bedrooms) all include full staff — a butler, chef, driver, and nannies on request. When to Go

May, June, and September are the sweet spot — dry season without the July–August peak crowds. Avoid the second half of December and the first week of January (peak Australian school holidays; rates double). Direct flights from Australia are cheap and frequent; from Europe or the US, budget a stopover in Singapore or Hong Kong.
