What Makes the Seychelles Different

The Seychelles is 115 islands scattered across 1.4 million km² of the Indian Ocean, and the luxury experience varies dramatically by island. Unlike the Maldives (broadly similar atolls, differentiated by resort), Seychelles resorts are shaped by their geography: private-island buyouts like North Island and Frégate, luxury resorts on the main granite islands (Praslin, Mahé), and the flatter coralline outer islands like Desroches. All three types are covered below.

1. North Island — The Ultimate Buyout

Just eleven villas across a 200-hectare private island, each occupying roughly a hectare of coastline with two-storey open-plan design by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens. This is where Prince William and Catherine honeymooned in 2011, and the resort still trades on that discreetly. From roughly $9,000/night, everything included. Book for a whole-island buyout (25 guests max) for a family celebration or the villa alone for a honeymoon.

2. Six Senses Zil Pasyon (Félicité Island)

The best-value true luxury option in the Seychelles. Thirty pool villas across the granite-boulder Félicité, all with dramatic ocean views. Six Senses' wellness programme is exceptional, the food is genuinely local (Creole tasting menus, not resort international), and rates run 40–50% below North Island. A 15-minute helicopter transfer from Mahé or a 15-minute boat from Praslin.

3. Frégate Island Private

Sixteen villas across a 2.19 km² private island that also serves as a genuine wildlife conservation project — free-roaming giant Aldabra tortoises, magpie robins reintroduced to a viable population, seven beaches shared only among the guests staying. Villas are estate-scale and highly private. Best for travellers who want conservation as part of the story, not just marketing.

4. Four Seasons Desroches Island

The only resort on the coralline outer island of Desroches, 230 km southwest of Mahé (accessible only by 45-minute Four Seasons charter flight). Flatter than the granite Inner Islands, but the atoll offers the best snorkelling and diving of any Seychelles resort. Suites and villas are large; the residences suit multi-gen groups. Best for divers and families.

5. Constance Lémuria (Praslin)

The best resort on the main island of Praslin, and the only one on Anse Georgette — regularly ranked among the world's most beautiful beaches. Ninety-six suites and villas, three swimmable beaches, and a genuinely good 18-hole golf course. Rates run 50–60% below the private-island options; the trade-off is that it's a hotel rather than a buyout experience.

Honeymoon at any budget: North Island (top end), Six Senses Zil Pasyon (best-value luxury), Constance Lémuria (mid-luxury). Family or multi-gen: Frégate or Four Seasons Desroches for the residence-sized villas and the conservation programme. Divers and snorkellers: Four Seasons Desroches.
