Overwater Bungalows Outside the Maldives: 9 Alternatives Worth Booking

Bora Bora, Fiji, Belize, Zanzibar, the Philippines and the Caribbean all have genuine overwater villas — several closer to home and cheaper than the Maldives.

Why look beyond the Maldives at all

Two reasons: distance and price. From the US east coast the Maldives is a 20-24 hour journey with at least one long connection, then a seaplane. Overwater villas there now start around US$900 a night and routinely pass US$2,500. Several other destinations offer the same architecture — a villa on stilts, a ladder into clear water, no neighbours in the sightline — at a fraction of the travel time or the rate.

French Polynesia: the original, and still the most beautiful

Bora Bora invented the overwater bungalow in the 1960s and the lagoon remains unmatched — turquoise water under the volcanic silhouette of Mount Otemanu. The Four Seasons Bora Bora and the St Regis have the best villas; Conrad Bora Bora Nui offers slightly better value on the quieter Motu To'opua. Expect US$1,200-2,800 a night. From Los Angeles it is eight hours to Papeete plus a short domestic hop — half the journey of the Maldives for a US traveller.

Fiji: the only true overwater villas in the South Pacific outside Tahiti

Likuliku Lagoon Resort on Malolo has Fiji's only overwater bures — ten of them, adults-only, over a protected lagoon. It books out six to nine months ahead. Fiji's advantage is the flight: ten hours from Los Angeles, four from Sydney, and no seaplane required. Rates run FJ$2,200-3,600 a night all-inclusive of meals.

Belize and Mexico: the short-haul answer for North America

Belize has a handful of genuine overwater options — Thatch Caye and the private-island Cayo Espanto — two hours from Houston or Miami plus a boat. Mexico's Palafitos at El Dorado Maroma near Playa del Carmen are the only overwater suites on the Mexican Caribbean, and they are a 45-minute drive from Cancun airport. Both sit at US$450-900 a night, roughly half the Maldives equivalent, with a fraction of the travel.

Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean without the Maldives premium

The Residence Zanzibar and Melia Zanzibar both offer overwater accommodation on the east coast, and Zanzibar pairs naturally with a Tanzanian safari — a combination the Maldives cannot offer. Rates run US$500-1,100. The trade-off is tidal: the east coast has a dramatic tide that empties the shallows twice a day, so ask about the villa's depth at low water before booking.

The Philippines and Asia

El Nido Resorts' Miniloc and Lagen properties in Palawan have water cottages over the karst-fringed bays, at US$350-700 a night — the best value overwater stay anywhere. Thailand and Indonesia have almost none: the few 'overwater' villas advertised there are usually over lagoons or pools, not open sea. Check satellite imagery before you commit.

How to choose

Travelling from North America with a week: Bora Bora, Belize or Mexico. Travelling from Australia or New Zealand: Fiji. Combining a beach with a safari: Zanzibar. Prioritising budget over prestige: Palawan. Only the Maldives offers the density of choice — 150-plus resorts — but on any single metric other than choice, one of these beats it.
