Adults-Only Resort vs Adults-Only Area: What the Label Really Means

Only5Star Editorial7 min read

"Adults-only" can describe a whole resort, one side of a shared complex, a single pool or a dinner service. Four official examples show where children can still appear, and what to confirm in writing before you book.

Will children still be present in shared spaces?

It depends on what the adults-only label covers. When a whole property sets a minimum age, there should be no children in the lobby, at the beach or in the restaurants. When the label covers one side of a complex, a single pool or a dinner service, children can still be present in the spaces around it. The four resorts below each show a different kind of policy, taken from their own official pages. This guide covers only that practical question: where children can appear, and what to ask before booking. For the wider age-policy categories, see our guide to adults-only luxury travel.

How do the four policy types compare?

Wording as published on each resort's official pages when checked on 11 October 2026. The where-children-can-be-present column is our reading of that wording, not a statement by the resort.

What does each policy type actually guarantee?

A property-wide restriction is the only type that governs every shared space: arrival, pool, beach, restaurants and spa. An adults-only side of a shared complex governs that side only; the neighbouring resort's spaces, and sometimes its guests, are part of the picture. An adults-only area governs one space, such as a pool, and nothing else. A venue or time restriction governs one place at certain times; on other nights, and everywhere else, the resort's family policy applies. None of these labels describes noise, crowding or atmosphere. They describe who is allowed where.

Hurawalhi: what does a property-wide restriction look like?

Hurawalhi, in Lhaviyani Atoll, applies its age rule to the whole island. Its official getting-here page calls it adults-only and says it "welcomes guests above the age of 15", while its official fact sheet says "aged 15 and over". Those two wordings differ for a guest who is exactly 15, so if anyone in your party is that age, ask the resort to confirm in writing. Arrival is by a 40-minute daylight seaplane from Malé, and every guest on the island falls under the same minimum age.

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana: what changes on shared grounds?

Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana's official FAQ says it is adults-only for guests ages 18 and over, that the adjacent Hyatt Ziva welcomes all ages, and that the minimum check-in age is 18. Under-18s are not permitted on the Zilara side. The two resorts share grounds, though, and the official Hyatt Ziva fact sheet says adults staying at Ziva have full access to Zilara. That access is described for adults only; the official pages do not give children at Ziva access to Zilara. If you choose to use the Ziva side's restaurants or facilities, you will be in family spaces. The contact page puts the resort about 15 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). For what all-inclusive plans cover at adults-only resorts, see our adults-only all-inclusive guide.

The Westin Hapuna: what does an adults-only pool cover?

The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast is a family-welcoming resort with one adults-only space. Marriott's official overview lists both a Family Pool and an Adult Infinity Pool, and Mauna Kea Resort's official Westin page describes an Adults-Only Infinity Edge Pool alongside a separate Family Pool. The rest of the resort, including the beach, restaurants and lobbies, is shared with families. The official pages reviewed do not publish the age threshold for the adult pool, so ask the resort in writing if it matters to your party. Marriott gives Kona International Airport (KOA) as the nearest airport, about 22 miles away.

Anantara Kihavah: when is a restaurant adults-only?

Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas, in Baa Atoll, is explicitly family-welcoming. Its official family page lists a kids' club for ages 4 to 12, teen recreation, children's amenities, child-friendly menus and babysitting from three months. The one adults-only rule published on the pages reviewed applies to dinner at SEA, its underwater restaurant: dinner is an exclusive adults-only experience except on Mondays and Thursdays. On those two nights, SEA dinner is not adults-only, and children can be present throughout the resort at all times. The main official page gives an approximately 35-minute seaplane from Malé, with seaplanes operating in daytime only.

Which shared spaces should you ask about?

Ask about each space you expect to use, not the resort as a whole. Arrival: the lounge, transfer boat or seaplane, and lobby. Water: every pool, the beach and any snorkelling or watersports base. Dining: each restaurant and bar, and whether rules vary by meal or day of the week. Wellness: the spa, gym and any shared relaxation areas. Shared complexes: which spaces belong to the neighbouring resort, and who can use yours. The answers tell you more than the label does.

Does the arrival affect who you will see?

Sometimes. At an island resort, the seaplane or boat may be the only route in, so the arrival experience follows the resort's own policy; at Hurawalhi that means a 40-minute daylight seaplane carrying guests who all meet its minimum age, while at Anantara Kihavah families travel on the same daytime seaplanes. At a mainland resort such as Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana, about 15 minutes from PUJ, or The Westin Hapuna, about 22 miles from KOA, airport transfers and shared drop-off areas are more likely to mix guests of different properties and ages. Daytime-only seaplanes at both Maldives resorts also mean a late international arrival may need a night in Malé; confirm the connection before booking flights.

What should you confirm in writing before booking?

Send the resort a short email and keep the reply. The minimum age that applies to your stay, and whether it applies to the whole property. The exact age of every guest in your party, if anyone is close to the threshold. Which spaces, if any, are shared with another resort or with families. For any adults-only pool or restaurant, its age threshold and the days or times the rule applies. Whether school-holiday dates change any of the above. Ask also for current rates for your dates and party: no like-for-like official price comparison is published across these four resorts, so this guide shows no prices.

Which sources were checked for this guide?

We checked the official resort pages and fact sheets linked above on 11 October 2026: Hurawalhi, Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana and Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana, The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort through Marriott and Mauna Kea Resort, and Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas. Where an official page did not state a detail, such as the Westin adult pool's age threshold, we have not supplied one. Policies, venue rules and transfer arrangements can change, so reconfirm them for your dates. The hero image is a generic travel image and does not show any named resort.
