Fiji is a year-round destination, but the difference between the best month and the worst is significant for families. Here's how we plan around it.

Fiji's Two Seasons at a Glance

Fiji has a distinct dry season (May–October) and wet season (November–April). Temperatures vary less than most tropical destinations — 24–30°C year-round — so the meaningful variable is rain and humidity. In the dry season, expect predictable sun with 5–8 rainy days per month, mostly brief afternoon showers. In the wet season, humidity climbs to 85%+ and rain can be heavy and persistent, particularly January–March, which also carries cyclone risk.

Month-by-Month for Families

May: warm, dry, 20–30% off peak rates — the best value month. June–August: coolest and driest of the year (23–26°C, low humidity), which suits toddlers and older grandparents; peak rates and full resorts. September: excellent weather, water is at its warmest (27°C), rates begin easing. October: often the single best month — dry, warm ocean, shoulder pricing, thinner crowds. November: shoulder season with rising humidity; still viable. December–January: peak Australian school holiday demand, cyclone risk begins, rates 40–60% above shoulder. February–March: highest cyclone risk; even if weather cooperates, humidity is uncomfortable for young kids. April: transitional; often fine but weather can turn.

School Holidays and How to Play Them

Australian and NZ school holidays (early July, late September, mid-December to late January) drive Fiji's peak pricing. If your school allows, taking children out of school for the last week of May or the first week of October delivers dry-season conditions at 25–35% below school-holiday rates.

What About Cyclone Season?

Cyclones in Fiji are relatively rare — an average of 1–2 named systems per year make landfall — but concentrate in January–March. Travel insurance that covers weather-related evacuation is essential for wet-season trips.
