The Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: Dry Season, Green Season and the Two Value Months

The Pacific and Caribbean coasts run opposite calendars, which is why the standard advice is only half right.

Two coasts, two calendars

Almost all Costa Rica advice describes the Pacific side, where the dry season runs December to April and the wettest months are September and October. The Caribbean coast does close to the opposite: September and October are its driest, brightest months, which is precisely when Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo are at their best. If your dates are fixed to the northern autumn, you have not lost the trip — you have simply been pointed at the wrong coast.

December to April: the reliable window

Dry, sunny and busy. Guanacaste and Papagayo are at their most reliable, the Arenal and Monteverde trails are firm underfoot, and wildlife concentrates around shrinking water sources, which makes it easier to see. Christmas, New Year and Easter are the peak weeks and price accordingly; March aligns with US spring break and books out early at Four Seasons Papagayo and the Nayara properties. February to May is also quetzal season in the cloud forest, which is reason enough to weight the trip toward Monteverde or San Gerardo de Dota.

May and November: the value months

These two shoulder months are the most underrated dates in the Costa Rican calendar. Mornings are typically clear, rain comes as a defined afternoon burst, the landscape is at its greenest, and rates fall by roughly 30%. Guiding is easier to book at short notice, and the lodges are quieter. The trade is that a couple of afternoons will be lost to rain — which, if you plan activities for the morning, costs you very little.

Wildlife timing worth planning around

Green turtle nesting at Tortuguero peaks July to October. Humpback whales pass the Osa Peninsula and Marino Ballena in two windows — July to October from the southern hemisphere, and December to March from the north — giving Costa Rica one of the longest whale-watching seasons anywhere. Resplendent quetzals are most visible February to May. Sea turtle arribadas at Ostional run through the wet season, September and October being the most dramatic.

Building the trip around the timing

Whatever the month, the structural advice does not change: two regions, seven to ten nights, and private transfers rather than a hire car. In dry season, pair Arenal with Papagayo. In September and October, flip to the Caribbean side and pair Tortuguero with the cloud forest. Book the guide before the room — the best ones in Costa Rica are booked months ahead and they are what turns a good lodge into a good trip.
