The Best Time to Visit Bora Bora: Dry Season, Rates and Lagoon Clarity

May to October is the easy answer. The more useful answer is which four weeks give you dry-season water without dry-season pricing.

The two seasons, honestly described

French Polynesia runs a dry season from May to October and a wetter, more humid season from November to April. The difference is real but smaller than most people expect. Dry season brings south-east trade winds, humidity around 75%, daytime highs near 28°C and the flattest lagoon of the year — which matters more than rainfall, because lagoon clarity is most of what you came for. Wet season is a couple of degrees warmer, considerably more humid, and prone to heavy afternoon showers that clear as fast as they arrive. Cyclones are possible between November and March but rare on Bora Bora itself.

The shoulder weeks that are worth targeting

Late April to early June and late September through October are the sweet spots. You get dry-season conditions without July and August pricing, the resorts are quieter, and the better overwater categories are still available at three to four months' notice rather than twelve. September in particular tends to combine excellent visibility with softer rates as the northern summer ends.

Humpback whales: July to October

Humpbacks migrate through French Polynesian waters from July to late October, and Bora Bora and neighbouring Moorea are among the few places in the world where regulated in-water encounters are permitted. If that is a priority, it firmly anchors your trip in the peak season — and it is worth the premium. Book the operator before the room; the good ones fill months ahead.

What it costs, and when

Overwater villas run roughly $1,200–$2,600 a night in high season, with beach pool villas at $800–$1,400. Half-board is close to essential — there is very little dining outside the resorts — and adds $180–$260 per person per day. In the November to April window, the same villas commonly sit 25–35% lower, which is the single biggest argument for travelling in the wetter months if your tolerance for an afternoon shower is reasonable.

Getting the timing right from the US

Bora Bora is the shortest route to an overwater villa from North America: eight hours Los Angeles to Papeete, then a fifty-minute island hop. That makes the dry season genuinely accessible on a one-week trip from the west coast, which the Maldives never is. May, June, September and October all work well against a US calendar without colliding with school holidays.
