Luxury Lodges in Tasmania for a Long Weekend (2026)
Three nights, one flight from Melbourne or Sydney, and one of the world's most dramatic wilderness backdrops. The Tasmanian lodges worth building a weekend around.
Why Tasmania Works as a Long Weekend
A 90-minute flight from Melbourne or 2 hours from Sydney gets you to a place that feels — visually and pace-wise — nothing like the mainland. The state's luxury lodge scene is small enough (fewer than a dozen genuine five-star properties) that choosing is straightforward, and each is close enough to a major airport that a Thursday-to-Sunday works. Three nights is the right length: one to arrive, one to explore, one to leave properly rested.
1. Saffire Freycinet — The Icon
The most awarded lodge in Australia, and rightly so. Twenty suites facing the Hazards mountains and Great Oyster Bay, an all-inclusive model that covers every meal (the kitchen is genuinely excellent), and a full activity programme — kayaking to Wineglass Bay, mountain biking, oyster tastings at Freycinet Marine Farm. A 2.5-hour drive from Hobart or a 15-minute helicopter transfer. Book 4–6 months ahead.
2. Pumphouse Point (Lake St Clair)
A former hydroelectric pumphouse converted into 18 rooms suspended 250 metres out over Lake St Clair in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The setting is unlike anywhere else in Australia — mirror-still black water, the shoreline lit by mist most mornings. Meals are communal but excellent. Best for couples who want quiet more than they want a full activity programme.
3. Thousand Lakes Lodge (Central Highlands)
A former Antarctic explorer training base converted into a 12-room fly-fishing and wilderness lodge on the Central Plateau. All-inclusive, all activities included (fly-fishing, hiking, star-gazing in one of the world's darkest skies). Best for solo travellers or couples who want the wildest option — this is genuinely remote in a way the coastal lodges are not.
4. MACq 01 or The Tasman (Hobart)
If your weekend is only two nights and you want to hit MONA, Salamanca Market, and the Bruny Island day trip, base in Hobart instead of a wilderness lodge. MACq 01 sits on the harbour with 114 story-themed rooms; The Tasman is Marriott's Luxury Collection entry, restored from an 1840s heritage building on Parliament Square. Both are 15 minutes from the airport and a 5-minute walk to Salamanca.
When to Go
November through April is the reliable window — daytime highs of 18–24°C, long daylight hours, and low rainfall. February and March are the sweet spot: warmest sea temperatures, harvest at the vineyards, and the crowds of January (school holidays) gone. Winter (June–August) is dramatic — snow on the highlands, fireside dining — but pack accordingly and expect some road closures.
How to Plan the Weekend
Best long-weekend structure: fly into Hobart Thursday evening, dinner at Franklin or Peppina, sleep at MACq 01. Friday morning drive or helicopter to Saffire (2.5 hours by road), spend Friday and Saturday there, fly out from Hobart Sunday. Total three nights, minimal driving, and both a city and wilderness experience.
