Atacama vs Patagonia: Which Luxury Lodge Trip Is Right for You?

Two of South America's great luxury-lodge destinations, one country, radically different trips. How to choose — and why the answer might be both.

The Short Answer

Choose the Atacama Desert for otherworldly landscapes, world-class stargazing, and a warm-dry climate that works year-round. Choose Patagonia for glacial drama, the Torres del Paine peaks, and the world's most spectacular hiking. Choose both — flying between them takes half a day via Santiago — if you have 10+ days and want the definitive Chilean luxury trip. The two combined make the strongest case for South American luxury travel that exists.

The Landscape

The Atacama is the driest non-polar desert on earth — moonscape salt flats, altiplano lagoons ringed by pink flamingos, geothermal geyser fields at 4,300 metres. Patagonia is the opposite: glacial-blue lakes, granite spires (the Torres del Paine massif), and grasslands ranged by guanacos and pumas. Photographers with a specific aesthetic will know which suits them; travellers who love both should sequence Atacama first, Patagonia second, so the trip crescendos.

The Weather

Atacama: warm days (20–25°C) and cold nights year-round at 2,400 metres. Almost no rain. The best months are April–May and September–November for the balance of light and comfort. Patagonia: usable November–March only, with strong winds even in peak summer, temperatures 10–18°C, and rapidly changing conditions. Late November and early March are the shoulders — fewer crowds, same weather.

The Lodges — Atacama

Explora Atacama (the original and still the reference) offers 50 rooms and the most comprehensive guided activity programme in the region — every excursion led by two guides with fewer than eight guests.
